An icon of glamour and luxury, the current Waldorf Astoria New York is one of the world’s most prestigious and best known hotels. This landmark building, designed by architects Schultze and Weaver, was completed in 1931 and was the world’s tallest hotel until 1963. The Waldorf Astoria is a member of Historic Hotels of America, an official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
In October 2014 Anbang Insurance Group purchased the Waldorf Astoria New York and announced the hotel would be closed for a multiyear renovation, resulting in one of the most extensive restoration and renovation projects in New York City’s history.
Grand Light has been selected by Anbang, Lehrer Cumming, Building Conservation Associates Inc., and NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to restore 145 historic chandeliers, pendants, wall sconces, and ceiling lights for the hotel.
Grand Light’s on-site team, working in conjunction with Tishman Construction Corporation and H&L Electric, carefully disassembled and packed all historic lighting fixtures for transport. Removal required the combination of lifts, pulleys, dollys, scaffolds, and ladders to carefully remove all crystal components and dissassemble large chandeliers into sections for easy transport through the halls of the landmark hotel.
Each chandelier was thoroughly inspected and documented of all components finish, mechanical, and electrical condition. All historic fixtures were thoroughly inspected and documented during on-site disassembly and removal. This information is used to generate project submittals and drawings for each fixture type, and details the assembly of existing components along with finish, mechanical, and electrical conditions.
All information collected and documented on-site and in-factory are then submitted as an all-encompassing report to the client for review. This report also contains fixture work scope and recommended corrective action for any deficiencies.
