Restoring the Loew’s Theatre – A Historic Deep-Dive into an Iconic Theatre’s Upcoming Reopening

Grand Light has been hard at work from 2025 to now on our ongoing restoration work for the Loew’s Jersey Theatre, a grand historic venue currently undergoing a major renovation ahead of its highly anticipated reopening.
This large-scale project encompasses both the restoration of existing historic fixtures and the recreation of missing historic lights, all guided by extensive archival research and careful design.

With many original fixtures either heavily deteriorated or no longer present, our team has relied on historic photographs, existing fixture motifs and elements, and our in-house archives to accurately interpret and rebuild these pieces. Despite working from limited and often century-old reference materials, we have been able to piece together the visual language of the theatre’s original lighting design.
Using these archival references alongside advanced 3D LiDAR scanning, we were able to capture the intricate details of existing fixtures and their ornamental elements. These scans, combined with our research, informed a series of 2D drawings and fully realized 3D models, which were developed in collaboration with the theatre team to ensure historical accuracy while accommodating modern fabrication requirements.

As design work progresses, our artisans have also begun the careful restoration of the theatre’s existing fixtures, including its centerpiece chandelier. This monumental fixture features six eight-foot-tall arms, each requiring extensive attention.
Restoration begins with processes such as media blasting and cleaning with our HSMI (Hydrosonic Molecular Impact Cleaning System), followed by detailed handwork to preserve the integrity of each component while revealing its original character.

Grand Light would also like to extend their thanks to Jersey City’s Jennifer Brown (@jbrophoto) for stopping by the factory to see and photograph the restoration process for this project. It’s always a privilege to share the craftsmanship that goes into these projects, and we’re looking forward to sharing even more as the restoration continues!

Stay tuned for more as this restoration continues – both for the unveiling of the newly fabricated historic fixtures and the full transformation of the theatre’s restored originals. We’re looking forward to sharing more of these stunning fixtures with you!
And thank you APTNE for hosting a great tour and event at the Loew’s Theatre earlier this year! We’re thankful for the opportunity to talk about our role in this ambitious renovation.
