The LED Advantage: Retrofit Solutions – Luminaire Specific Retrofit Kits Designed for Oklahoma City’s Jim Thorpe Building

As historic lighting restoration continues to evolve, fixture owners are increasingly looking for ways to preserve architectural character while benefiting from modern lighting technology. To meet this need, Grand Light has expanded its capabilities with custom-engineered LED retrofit solutions designed specifically for decorative, historic, and architecturally significant fixtures.

Every LED system is carefully developed around the unique requirements of each fixture, utilizing 3D modeling, photometric research, and prototype testing to ensure optimal performance before installation. The result is a lighting solution that seamlessly integrates into the original design while improving efficiency, reliability, and long-term serviceability.

Our LED Advantage program consists of three primary retrofit categories:

A recent example of these capabilities can be found at the restoration of Oklahoma City’s Jim Thorpe Building. As part of this historic rehabilitation project, Grand Light restored and upgraded a variety of decorative lighting fixtures throughout the property, including pendants, wall-mounted fixtures, large exterior standards, and monumental suspended luminaires. Each fixture required careful consideration to preserve its historic appearance while delivering dependable modern performance.

One fixture in particular presented a unique opportunity to showcase our Integrated/Dedicated LED Retrofit Solutions: a steel suspension luminaire measuring approximately 16 feet in length and 20 inches in diameter.

Grand Light completely rewired the fixture and engineered a custom linear LED retrofit system designed specifically for its elongated housing and multi-circuit configuration. The fixture contains three independent lighting circuits, each equipped with dedicated LED arrays that work together to provide balanced, uniform illumination across the entire length of the luminaire.

The completed retrofit utilizes twelve custom LED strips arranged in a three-by-four layout, with four strips assigned to each circuit. The two outer circuits utilize slightly shorter LED assemblies while the center circuit spans a longer section of the fixture, allowing light to be distributed evenly throughout the housing.

By combining custom LED layouts, precision engineering, and thorough photometric evaluation, our Linear LED Kit transformed a complex historic fixture into an efficient, serviceable lighting system while maintaining the original visual character that defines the space.

We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the restoration of the remarkable lighting fixtures within the Jim Thorpe Building and to help preserve an important piece of architectural history.
