Columbia University Opal Globe for Bronze Posts Complete

New Haven, CT – Grand Light has completed a sample globe opal for approval which is unique in its own due to the fact that it has two openings, one on the top and one on the bottom. As part of this project, Grand Light will be fabricating twenty two 18″ glass globes, that will replace all of the existing acrylic globes on the poles of the Morningside campus.

As glass globes are formed by a mold, and the glass is then fit into a jig that was built to house the globe firmly in position while cutting the hole in the bottom. A diamond saw and glass grinder are used during this tedious process.

The globe is 18″ in diameter. The side with the lip will support the finial, while the straight cut bottom will be attached to the post.glass2.jpgThis view shows the bottom hole.
