Harvard University – McKinlock Hall Historic Lighting Restoration

New Haven, CT – In the mid-1920s, Harvard constructed student residences on the banks of the recently dammed Charles River, residences initially occupied by freshmen. McKinlock Hall, built in 1925, was one of those original buildings. The building was donated by the family of Lieut. George Alexander McKinlock Jr., a Harvard graduate who was killed by a German machine gun near Soissons in 1918. The bulk of McKinlock Hall consists of 5 entryways, each of which leads to four or five floors of suites for approximately 35 students. McKinlock also serves as the center of Leverett social life: it houses the Leverett Dining Hall, the Junior and Senior Common Rooms, the Old Library Theatre, the Master’s Residence, and several other common spaces.

Grand Light was selected to restore the historic fixtures in the hall located on the the Harvard University Campus in Cambridge, MA. There are several different types of fixtures ranging from chandeliers, wall sconces, ceiling mounted fixtures, pendant lights, and outdoor lanterns. These fixtures will undergo several different restoration techniques ranging from cleaning and conservation of the existing finishes, to complete refinishing. All fixtures will be wired in accordance with UL standards.

This project has been brown down into three phases, requiring certain fixtures for certain locations at different times. The first phase of this project is the masters house, Shown below are the fixture types and there specific treatments that are in the Masters house as they were removed from the site by Grand Light and returned back prior to the house being reoccupied.

Work Scope:
– Existing fixture shall be disassembled, clean all components to preserve existing finish.
– Application of a museum grade wax.
– Replace all missing decorative and mechanical components.
– Repair all mechanical defects.
– Replace and rewire all electrical components with UL listed products and test in accordance
with UL standards. Candelabra base sockets to be utilized.
-Many crystal pieces are missing and need to be re-pinned.

– Replace all non-original glass with glass to match original glass. Sandblast interior of glass to provide lamp diffusion and reduce glare.
– Remove existing painted finish and refinish with a semi gloss black finish and a UV
Resistant protective lacquer top coat.

The second and third phase of this project contain different fixture types which have later delivery dates and are currently in production at the Grand Light facility in Seymour, Connecticut. These types include Type AE08, AE02, AE03, AE04, AEX01, AEX02,AEX03, and AEX04. Upon Completion, information regarding these fixture types will be reported.
