American Artisans At Work Preserving History

Breathing New “Light” Into Beacon Hill

Grand Light was selected by CBT Architects, Colantonio Inc, George Sexton Associates, Building Conservation Associates, and the State of Massachusetts to restore existing historic lighting fixtures while designing and manufacturing custom lighting fixtures for the Senate Chamber renovation project.

This project included the restoration of a gigantic chandelier over 30′ tall, numerous cast brass wall sconces, and a set of beautiful torchieres located on the Senate Chambers podium.

Grand Light artisans worked tirelessly to conserve the existing two-tone antique brass with gold rub finish details. The chandelier was disassembled, media walnut blasted, ultrasonically and hand cleaned. Multiple application coats of UV resistant protective coating of clear metal wax was applied.

Grand Light’s on-site specialists came fully prepared to carefully transport, assemble, and test the historic chandelier. The chandelier was reassembled from the top down, utilizing documentation from the initial disassembly to guarantee every component was assembled historically accurate.

Additionally this project required the development of adjustable uplights that highlighted the dome of the Senate Chamber. Grand Light engineers worked with the designers at George Sexton Associates to incorporate the use of an LED GU10 in the original lamp locations.

A custom shade was designed and replicated from the historic original except this shade incorporated acrylic lens to reflect light downward without interfering with the precise optics of the GU10 lamp required to properly light the dome. This lens reflected light in the glass uniformly.

Grand Light, in conjunction with George Sexton Associates, carefully adjusted eighty modified GU10 uplights at a precise 10 degree angle during installation.

Through the combined efforts and dedication of our Grand Light specialists, Colantonio Inc, George Sexton Associates, and State House personnel, the installation was amazingly completed within three days.

In addition to the restoration of the historic lighting fixtures, Grand Light designed custom components to replicate historic chandeliers documented in a photograph. The fabricated cast brass components were finished in a dark antique brass patina, burnished, and received multiple applications of a protective UV resistant lacquer top coat.

All fixtures were wired in accordance with UL standards, assembled and tested.

These stunning fixtures will be enjoyed by the members of the Massachusetts Senate and visitors for decades to come.
