Historic Theater Reopens To Critical Acclaim
Congratulations to Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater’s restoration and grand reopening! The 12-year restoration project, which began in 2009, involved the restoration of historic lighting fixtures, wall restoration, repointing mortar on brick, restoring the entrance, HVAC upgrades, and updates to the historic lobby.
The Gowanda Hollywood Theater opened on April 16, 1926 and was designed by the renowned architects Leon H. Lempert & Son. It hosted live performances, shows, and motion pictures. It boasts marble floors, historic lights, ornate plaster designs, a softly lit ceiling dome, and 990 seats.
Grand Light is proud to have been chosen to restore all the historic lighting fixtures for this legacy restoration project. The fixtures include floral accented wall sconces, large flower shaped recessed lights, pendant lights, ceiling fixtures, and exit signs.
All of these fixtures were completely refinished, all mechanical defects were corrected, missing components were replicated, and re-wired. Once complete, the fixtures were packaged and delivered and reinstalled in the theater.
The project team and theater were also the recipients of two prominent preservation awards, the Louise Bethune Award for Outstanding Project at the 2022 Preservation Buffalo Niagara Annual Ceremony and the Preservation League of NYS Annual Excellence Awards Program.
